Chapter Seven

Her mother’s been gone two years now, and Luna really doesn’t think she’s over it. Someone tore a hole in the sky; it’s not good, it’s not bad, it just changes everything. What we think of as wounds might be something else entirely. A broken heart of volcanic glass, burned and transformed.

She’s never seen the man in the truck again, since that night, but she’s thought a lot about what he’d said. She didn’t tell you anything, before she died, did she? By the time Luna had made it to the hospital, Rowan was already in a coma, and she’d stayed in it until they pulled the plug exactly one week later. So Mom couldn’t have told her anything before she died.
But with Rowan, you could never be too sure. She could be pretty uncanny at times, even for a witch.

But if her mother had told her anything, Luna had missed it. One more thing to feel bad about. Luna doesn’t even think that’s what the man had said anymore; the words had come from Luna’s own sad soul. Maybe the man had too; a creation born of her grief. Lost in a snowstorm; just me and my shadow.
